US Delegation meets BMS students

On Friday afternoon, January 24, 2025, guests from the USA visited the BMSW: On their journey between Davos and Zurich, a delegation from the institution "CareerWise," along with school leaders and representatives from teacher organizations, showed interest in the Swiss education system.

In the United States, many public schools focus on preparing students for university or college studies. The leaders of CareerWise are committed to establishing a more flexible education system. The emphasis is placed on creating institutional structures that allow students to either develop further within a company or pursue higher education, inspired by Switzerland's dual education system. In this way, young people are given better opportunities to realize their American Dream.

During the two-hour visit, Rector Beat Deola explained the structure of the Swiss education system as well as the vocational and academic options available in Switzerland after primary and secondary school. He demonstrated how practical work and school education complement each other in apprenticeships and highlighted the role of the vocational baccalaureate as a bridge to universities of applied sciences. Corinne Artho from the Organization of the World of Work (OdA) emphasized the importance of practical training and presented vocational training in healthcare.

During the panel discussion, students shared their experiences with apprenticeships and the vocational baccalaureate. They answered questions about their choice of education and plans for their future. The students openly discussed the advantages and disadvantages of an apprenticeship and how they intend to pursue their future career goals.

The exchange during the panel was appreciated by all parties. CareerWise, the school principal, and the students expressed enthusiasm and gratitude for the informative exchange. Afterward, they enjoyed a delicious buffet – after all, no one wanted to head into the weekend on an empty stomach!
